A Lifeline Between Two Communities

Building a bridge means physically connecting two communities on bothsides of the river. But the social, economic and cultural relationship createdhere is much wider than that. It is a pioneering mission to end all barriers,connecting a region with the future.

The Kuda Oya flowing between the two villages intersected the social,economic and cultural ties of Koleyaya and Aldeniya, which belong to theRideemaliyadda area in Badulla district.

Nearly 700 people in the two villages were crossing Kuda Oya to travelfrom one side to the other. It was a very difficult task due to the absence ofa bridge. Crossing the Kuda Oya during the rainy seasons was not a realityat all. In such cases, school children had to travel a huge extra distance ofaround 12 km. Farmers in the area faced severe difficulties in transportingtheir products due to the lack of a bridge.

The attention on this problem was focused during the Gammaddadoor-to-door operation. Accordingly, a bridge has been built across KudaOya connecting Koleaya and Aldeniya villages with the intervention ofGammadda. The road on both sides has also been developed usingconcrete under this project.

Speedmark Transportation Lanka Pvt. Ltd. and its Managing Director Mr.Sunil Malawana made their valuable financial contribution to fund thisproject.

The project was handed over to the people on 2024-11-08.
