Nawagaththegama, located in the Puttalam District, has long faced a severe challenge limited access to clean drinking water. The majority of its residents are farmers and daily wage earners, struggling to make ends meet, and this water crisis has only worsened their burden. The village's water supply has been heavily contaminated, forcing families to choose between consuming unsafe water or spending scarce resources on purchasing clean water. This situation has led to a rise in chronic kidney disease and other water-borne illnesses, threatening the health and well-being of the community.
The impact of this crisis goes beyond individual households. Nawagaththegama Maha Vidyalaya, which educates over 500 students, were also suffering from a lack of clean water. Students, teachers were all at risk due to the contaminated water supply, compounding the village’s struggle with health and safety.
In response to this pressing need, the Gammadda team, with the support of Mr. Piyasena Soorige and Ms. Soma P. Baduge, installed a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water filtration system in Nawagaththegama on October 04, 2024. This system now provides clean water to over 400 families in Kirimetiyawa, and the students and staff of Nawagaththegama Maha Vidyalaya. This project marks a significant turning point for the community, offering not only immediate relief but also the promise of a healthier future for generations to come.
