A Vital Step Toward a Healthier Future in Digannewa

Digannawa, a village located in Nikaweratiya within the Kurunegala District, has long struggled with a severe water crisis. Contaminated by agricultural runoff, the village’s water supply is unsafe for consumption, leading to alarming health consequences. Each year, at least 15 cases of kidney disease are reported among the residents, a clear indication of the dire need for clean and safe drinking water.

With over 223 families living in poverty, residents have been forced to choose between drinking unsafe water or purchasing clean water, which is too expensive for many. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) water filtration system has been installed in Digannawa, Kotawehera, to provide safe drinking water to the community.

The opening ceremony for this life-changing initiative took place on February 22, 2025. This project has been made possible through the generous support of the Jayathissa and Jayanthi Bandaragoda Foundation, whose commitment to community welfare has been instrumental in making clean drinking water accessible to the residents of Digannawa.

This new water system will help prevent diseases and improve the health of the community. It also reduces the financial burden on families who previously had to buy clean water. This project represents a significant step toward a better and healthier future for Digannawa.
