The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department in the Faculty of Dental Sciences at the University of Peradeniya Teaching Hospital was one of the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. People from villages and town, both young and old, from across the country make the journey to the department to receive care from one of the most distinguished teams in one of the most diverse dental wards that offered a variety of services and treatments for a variety of ailments as well as aftercare. The patients find safe refuge and comfort here. It is a home away from home.
Due to unavailability of-adequate funds from the ministry of health and the university, the ward was not functioning optimally and patient wellbeing was significantly compromised. There were severe problems including a leaky roof and a non centralized oxygen delivery system.
The washing machine and dryer at the ward were for domestic use and could not handle the load of scrubs worn by doctors during surgery. The doctors were working without scrubs. Other needs of the ward were painting & upgrading of the ward, the on call rooms of doctors/nurses and the furniture, replace damaged doors, provide electrical fittings and sanitary fittings and also to purchase a new industrial washing machine and dryer.
Despite all these hardships the department remained a trailblazer- setting many standards, making many breakthroughs and transforming lives.
Gammadda, in partnership with Next Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd, concluded work on renovating and upgrading the ward- including providing medical equipment such a centralized oxygen delivery system and handed over the ward today to to the countless patients who will benefit from it on the 3rd of May, 2023.
