Diganannawa, a village located in Nikaweratiya within the Kurunegala District, faces significant challenges regarding its water supply. The village's water is heavily contaminated with agricultural runoff, rendering it unsafe for consumption. This contamination has led to a troubling annual incidence of at least 15 cases of kidney disease among the residents.
With more than 223 families residing in Digannawa, the community endures extreme poverty. Residents are often forced to make a stark choice, drink the contaminated water or purchase clean water at prohibitive costs. This situation places an additional financial burden on families who are already struggling to make ends meet.
To address this critical issue, an RO water filtration system will be installed in Digennawa – Kotawehera and the inauguration ceremony was held on August 31, 2024. The RO plant will be situated in a central location within the village and will utilize an existing natural water source. This new system aims to provide the residents of Digannawa with access to clean, potable water, free from harmful pollutants.
The implementation of this RO Plant is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases in the community, improving overall health and quality of life for the village's residents. This initiative represents a crucial step toward alleviating the burden of contaminated water and supporting the well-being of Digannawa’s population.
