Poppitiya is home to more than 500 Families. This bridge is the only access point to village. If they didn't have this bridge they have to walk an additional 5km to get to their homes. This is an agricultural community where their main income is farming. Villagers were unable to take their goods to market. Additionally this area experiences large amounts of rain which results in frequent flooding.
Rainy season has always been a challenging time to the residents of this village. Due to higher water levels in the river school children are left with no choice but to stay home from school. Young Chanuka lost his life during this risky season. Villagers cannot transport their harvest nor attend to their day to day activities .
Upon completion of the bridge the Poppitiya residents were able to access essential services in a safe and timely manner. Their quality of life has improved due to the reduction of 5km from their daily commutes. They have seen improvement in their economic status due to the ability to quickly take their produce to market.
