Residents of Thullukudiyirippu are experiencing an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Diseases due to their contaminated water supply.
Thullukudiyippu is a village in rural Mannar. There are more than 410 families who call it home. The parents of these children mainly work as fisherfolk, dailywage casual labourers or are farmers. They live in a state of abject poverty. The village water supply is contaminated with agriculturalrunoff- resulting in unconsumable water. The people of Thullukudiyippu face the difficult choice between drinking contaminated water or purchasing water at exorbitant costs, which puts an additional financial burden on already struggling families. There are many patients undergoing treatment for various kidney ailments- some have already died.
Installation of an RO Plant in the village of Thullukudiyirippu using an existing water source. Install a Water Filling Station situated in the Thullukudiyirippu in a central location which will provide the residents of Thullukudiyirippu and the 7 neighboring villages have access to clean drinking water free of harmful pollutants. Further, it will reduce the incidence rate of water borne illnesses in the resident population. Moreover, we will introduce a preventive and periodic maintenance plan to ensure project longevity by forming a Gammadda Saviya.
