Residents of Asikulam are experiencing an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Diseases due to their contaminated water supply.
The village of Asikulam is located in the Vavuniya District. The village is home to more than 300 families. The people of Asikulam face the difficult choice between drinking contaminated water or purchasing water at exorbitant costs, which puts an additional financial burden on already struggling families. Sri Lanka especially districts such as Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala and Matale has faced issues regarding quality drinking water throughout many of its local communities. This problem has resulted in unsuitable levels of pollutants, causing health risks, such as foodborne disease, central nervous or reproductive failure, and various types of cancer. Additionally there is an epidemic of kidney disease caused by agricultural runofff and calcium deposits. There are more than 100 families or 1 in every 3 families in Asikulam struggling with kidney disease.
Installation of an RO Plant in the village of Asikulam using an existing water source. Install a Water Filling Station situated in a central location which will provide the residents of Asikulam and neighboring villages with access to clean drinking water- free of harmful pollutants. Further, it will reduce the incidence rate of water borne illnesses in the resident population. Moreover, Gammadda will introduce a preventive and periodic maintenance plan to ensure project longevity by forming a Gammadda Saviya Society.
