Summary

Residents of Unaapaana are experiencing an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Diseases due to their contaminated water supply.

Challenge

Unapaapaana in the Padiyathalawa DS division is located in the Ampara District. Uaapaana village is home to more than 1000 residents. The residents are mainly farmers and daily wage laborers. People in the area struggle daily with no access to clean drinking water. Thus, they are forced to make a multi kilometer journey to collect water from a nearby village or purchase water for their drinking and other needs or purchase drinking water at exorbitant costs. There is an epidemic of kidney disease with 18 patients receiving treatment for kidney disease in this small village.

Solution

Installation of an RO Plant in the village of Unaapaana using an existing water source. Install a Water Filling Station situated in a central location which will provide the residents of Unaapaana and neighboring villages with access to clean drinking water- free of harmful pollutants. Further, it will reduce the incidence rate of water borne illnesses in the resident population. Moreover, Gammadda will introduce a preventive and periodic maintenance plan to ensure project longevity by forming a Gammadda Saviya Society.
